Vienna, Wien, your guide to Vienna, Austria
The Opera House (Staatsoper) |
The State Opera building was built by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Null 1861-1869. Before the opening in 1869, the architecture and acoustics were criticised and Van der Null committed suicide. Two months later Von Sicardsburg died of a stroke.
In 1945 American bombing destroyed most of the building that reopened, almost completely rebuilt in 1955, when Austria regained independence.
Tickets are hard to get for this theatre which was once managed by Gustav Mahler (1897-1907), Richard Strauss (1919-1922) and Herbert von Karajan (1956-1964).
in the year 2000 the most expensive seats cost 2450 AS (Austrian Schillings), which is about £120 UK Pounds. From 2002 things will be easier to calculate as Europe adopts the new currency ' The Euro'.
